A narrative design tool for game writers and designers

Storymapper helps narrative designers plan a game’s story across time and place. Put the main quest, side quests and world events on one timeline, then pin every beat to the world map.

Free forever for the core features. No card needed.

The Mapper: pins, journeys and territories that play back in story order.

Quest lines side by side

Give the main quest, each side quest and each companion arc its own lane. Header rows mark acts, chapters or level bands, so you can see what a player can reach at each stage and where the pacing sags.

Dependencies between story beats

Connect the beat that hands over the key to the beat that needs it. Labelled connectors make quest dependencies visible to the whole team before anyone builds a level.

Story beats on the world map

Upload concept art of the world, a region map or a level layout. Pin each beat where it happens, draw the critical path with arrows and shade the zones each faction holds.

Play the story back for the team

Press play and the story moves across the map in order. It is a quick way to walk artists, level designers and producers through the narrative in a meeting.

Factions and command structures

Chart who leads whom, who is allied and who is at war on the Relationships chart. Each tie can start and end at a story beat, so the chart plays back as the plot turns.

One link for the whole team

Send a read-only link and anyone on the team can open the timeline, the chart and the map in a browser, with no account and nothing to install.

How it works

  1. Create a project for the game and add a lane for each quest line.
  2. Add a scene for each story beat, with labels such as “Cutscene”, “Boss” or “Choice”.
  3. Link beats that depend on each other, and add header rows for acts or regions.
  4. Upload the world map and pin each beat to its location.

Questions and answers

Does Storymapper handle branching dialogue?
No. It plans story structure: beats, quests, timing and location. Write branching dialogue in a dedicated dialogue tool, and use Storymapper for the shape of the whole story.
Is it only for video games?
No. The same timeline and map suit a board game campaign, a tabletop RPG scenario or a piece of interactive fiction.
What does it cost?
The Free plan covers four projects, with one map and one relationships chart in each. Storymapper Plus adds unlimited projects, maps and charts, images on your scenes and your own map icons.
