Terms of Use

Last updated: 9 October 2026.

These terms are the agreement between you and Storymapper. By opening an account you accept them. Please read them with the Privacy Policy, which explains how we handle your data.

1. Who we are

Storymapper (storymapper.co.uk) is a web app for planning stories on a timeline, a map and a relationships chart. It is run by Craig Hodgkinson, a sole trader in the United Kingdom, trading as Storymapper. In these terms “we” and “us” mean Craig Hodgkinson.

2. Your account

  • You must be 16 or over to open an account.
  • If you are under 18, you need a parent or guardian to agree before you buy Storymapper Plus, and they must make the payment.
  • Give an email address you can read. We use it to confirm your account and to reset your password.
  • Keep your password to yourself. You are responsible for what is done through your account. Tell us at once if you think someone else has used it.
  • An account is for one person. Please do not share a login.

3. Your work belongs to you

Everything you create in Storymapper, and every image you upload, stays yours. We claim no ownership of it.

You give us permission to store your work, copy it for backups and show it back to you, because the service cannot run otherwise. That permission ends when you delete the work or your account.

If you make a share link for a project, you ask us to show that project to anyone who opens the link, until you switch the link off. Who you give the link to is up to you, and what you share must keep to section 4.

You are responsible for what you upload. Only upload maps, images and text that you made yourself or have the right to use.

You can export any project as a file from Settings at any time. We recommend keeping your own copy of work that matters to you.

4. What you must not do

  • Break the law, or store content that is illegal in the United Kingdom.
  • Upload content that infringes someone else’s copyright or other rights.
  • Try to get into another person’s account or data.
  • Attack, overload or probe the service, or get round a plan limit.
  • Use automated tools to create accounts or to copy the service.
  • Resell the service or offer it to others as your own.

If you do any of these we may suspend or close your account (see section 10).

5. The plans

Free costs nothing. It includes 4 projects, with 1 map and 1 relationships chart in each project, and 50 MB of image storage.

Storymapper Plus is a paid subscription. It includes unlimited projects, with unlimited maps and unlimited relationships charts in each project, 2 GB of image storage, images on your scenes, your own background image for the work area and your own icons for your maps. It costs £3 a month or £30 a year.

“Unlimited” means we set no fixed number. It does not cover use that goes far beyond planning stories and puts the service at risk for other people.

We may change what a plan includes. If we reduce what you already have, we will give you at least 30 days’ notice by email.

6. Paying for Storymapper Plus

  • Who you pay. Storymapper Plus is sold through Onelink, a service run by Stripe. Onelink is the seller of record. It takes your payment, sends your receipt and appears on your bank statement. Its own terms, shown at checkout, apply to the payment alongside these terms.
  • Price and tax. The prices in section 5 are in pounds sterling and include VAT or the equivalent sales tax where you live. If you are outside the UK, the checkout page may show the price in your own currency. The price you see at checkout is the price you pay.
  • Renewal. Your subscription renews automatically at the end of each month or year, and your payment method is charged again, until you cancel.
  • Price changes. If we change the price, we will email you at least 30 days before the new price applies to you. You can cancel before it does.
  • Failed payments. If a renewal payment fails, it is tried again over the following days and you keep Storymapper Plus in the meantime. If it still fails, your account moves to Free.

7. Cancelling, and refunds

Cancelling. You can cancel at any time under Settings, then “Manage billing”, or through your Onelink account. You keep Storymapper Plus until the end of the period you have paid for. After that your account moves to Free and you are not charged again.

Changing your mind. You can cancel within 14 days of your first payment and receive a full refund. The same applies for 14 days after each yearly renewal. Email hello@storymapper.co.uk or ask Onelink’s support. When you subscribe you ask us to start the service straight away. We still refund in full within those 14 days.

After that. Payments are not refunded for a period you have partly used, unless the service was faulty or the law gives you a right to a refund.

If something is wrong. If Storymapper Plus does not work as described, tell us. We will fix it, and if we cannot fix it within a reasonable time you are entitled to a refund for the time affected.

8. When Storymapper Plus ends

Nothing you have made is deleted when you move back to Free. If you cancelled, we email you about a week before Storymapper Plus ends, and Settings shows a notice for that week.

Whatever goes beyond what Free includes stays in your account and is locked until you are on Storymapper Plus again. That means your projects beyond 4 (the first 4 on “Your projects” stay open, and you choose which by dragging them into order), your maps and your relationships charts beyond the first of each in a project (the top one in the sidebar stays open, and you choose which by dragging), the images on your scenes, the map icons you uploaded and your own background image. Each is marked with a green plus. Subscribe again and they open exactly as you left them.

You can still export all of your work, locked or not, from Settings. While you hold more than Free allows, you cannot add projects, maps, relationships charts or images until you are back within its limits.

9. The service

We provide Storymapper with reasonable care and skill, and we work to keep it running and your work safe. We do not promise that it will always be available or free of faults. It may be unavailable for short periods for maintenance or for reasons outside our control.

We may add, change or remove features. If we remove something important that you pay for, we will give you at least 30 days’ notice and you may cancel for a refund of the time you have paid for and not used.

If we ever close Storymapper, we will give you at least 60 days’ notice by email so that you can export your work, and we will refund any time you have paid for and not used.

10. Ending your account

You can delete your account at any time in Settings. This cancels any subscription and permanently deletes your profile, projects and images. It cannot be undone.

We may suspend or close an account that breaks section 4, or where the law requires it. Unless the matter is serious or urgent, we will warn you first and give you the chance to put it right and to export your work. If we close a paid account for a reason that is not your fault, we will refund the time you have paid for and not used.

We may delete a Free account that has not been signed in to for two years. We will email you at least 30 days beforehand.

11. Our responsibility to you

If we fail to keep to these terms, we are responsible for loss or damage you suffer that is a foreseeable result of our failure. We are not responsible for loss that is not foreseeable.

  • We are not responsible for loss caused by events outside our reasonable control, or by your own breach of these terms.
  • Storymapper is a planning tool. We are not responsible for loss of profit, loss of business or loss of opportunity.
  • If work is lost because of our failure, we will make reasonable efforts to recover it. You can limit any loss by exporting your projects regularly.
  • Our total responsibility to you in any 12 months is limited to the amount you paid for Storymapper in that time, or £100 if that is greater.

Nothing in these terms limits our responsibility for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else the law does not allow us to limit. Nothing in these terms takes away your legal rights as a consumer, including your rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. Citizens Advice (citizensadvice.org.uk) can explain those rights.

12. Storymapper itself

The Storymapper name, logo, design and software belong to us. You may use the app to plan your stories. You may not copy it, take it apart or build a competing service from it.

The map icons come from game-icons.net under a Creative Commons licence. You may use them in maps you make here, including maps you publish, as long as you credit their authors. The Credits page lists them.

If you send us an idea or a suggestion, we may use it without owing you anything.

13. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms, for example when the law or the service changes. We will change the date at the top. For a significant change we will email you at least 30 days before it takes effect. If you do not accept the change, you can delete your account, and we will refund any time you have paid for and not used.

14. Law and disputes

Please contact us first at hello@storymapper.co.uk. Most problems can be settled quickly.

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you may bring a claim in your own courts. If you live outside the United Kingdom, you keep any consumer rights that the law of your own country gives you and that cannot be removed by agreement.

If a court finds part of these terms invalid, the rest still applies. If we do not enforce a term straight away, we may still enforce it later.
